Students with no knowledge of German begin with the language sequence: Germ 202/204. Students who have studied German in High School begin with the language sequence: Germ 221/223. In second year, majors and minors should take Germ 313/315 together with Germ 331/333.
If you have prior knowledge of German, for example through German-speaking family or an extended stay in Germany, consult with the Undergraduate Advisor, Dr. Sandra Hoenle, to be placed into the appropriate course. Permission to register or remain in a particular course can be refused if the Department judges that your knowledge exceeds the level of the course. If you are a native speaker, you may not take language courses by special assessment or receive advanced credit for them.
Courses requiring no knowledge of German: Germ 200 - Encounters with German Culture; Germ 317 - German Civilization; Germ 357 - Topics in Film; Germ 359 - German Texts in Translation .
To major in German, you can choose to graduate with either a B.A. or an Honours Degree.
For a B.A. in German, sixteen half courses in German, out of a total of 40 half courses, are required. Courses required for a B.A.: Germ 349 OR 353, Germ 401, and at least two more half courses at the 400 level or higher. A maximum of two half-course equivalents of Germ 357 and/or Germ 359 and a maximum of two half-course equivalents from German studies in a different discipline, subject to Departmental approval, may be credited towards a degree.
Admission to an Honours Program requres a grade point average of at least 3.30 and a recommendation to the Dean by the Department. Students interested in applying for Honours should discuss their plans with and seek the advice of the Department. The program requires ar least eighteen half course equivalents in German, including Germ 349 or Germ 353. A micro-focus (four half course equivalents) in a closely related field (such as History) is strongly recommended. In the final year you must take Germ 591 (Honours Project). This will require the preparation of an Honours Thesis under close departmental supervision.
You can also combine a B.A. in German with an undergraduate degree in another subject through a Combined Degree program.
If you want to combine some study of German with a degree in another subject, you can take German as a Minor. A Minor can meet the international requirements of another program and expand career opportunities. Ten half courses in German, out of 40 half courses, are a minimum for the Minor in German; of these, at least two half courses must be at the 400 level or higher.
