The East Asian Language Studies Major degree provides students with a solid training in all four language skills (reading, writing, speaking and listening) in two main East Asian languages, Chinese and Japanese. Students in the program will choose one of the two languages as the primary study field; the other will be secondary. Training in the two languages, along with required courses in East Asian cultures and literatures, will permit students to achieve an advanced level in their primary field and intermediate level in the secondary, as well as to gain profound knowledge of the two East Asian cultures. Students with the major degree will have diverse career opportunities including diplomatic services in the federal and provincial governments, international business, education, library services, legal services, translation, cultural consultation and so on. Students wishing to embark on an academic career may enter arts, management, education and law.
The major in East Asian Language Studies is offered by the Department of Germanic, Slavic and East Asian Studies. Students wishing to enroll in this program should consult the program advisor or a departmental undergraduate advisor.
Admission
Students should register for this major in the Faculty of Arts. Courses constituting the field of East Asian Language Studies include all those listed below under "Requirements." Students are subject to all graduation regulations of the Faculty.
